Rawa Upma

                                   Upma is every easy-to-cook recipe. We can make different varieties of upma recipes, but rava upma is the basic upma. In Andhra, for any function they will mostly serve upma as breakfast.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup semolina (sooji, rava)
  • 1 medium sized onion, cut lengthwise
  • 2 green chilly,slit into half
  • 1/2 tsp avvalu/ mustard seed
  • 1/2 tsp jeera/ cumin seeds
  • 1 tbsp senagapappu/ chana dal
  • ½ tbsp minapa pappu/ urad dal
  • ½ inch ginger grated or chopped finely
  • 3 cups water
  • 1 sprig of curry leaves
  • 7-8 ground nuts or cashew nuts
  • 2 tbsp oil or ghee
  • salt as required

Method:

  • Boil 3 cups of water in a pan.
  • While boiling water, take another pan, heat oil or ghee.
  • Add mustard seeds, when they splutter, add the cumin along with ground nuts, chana dal and urad dal. 
  • Fry till they start to brown a little.
  • Now add onions and fry till they become transparent. Now add the green chilly, ginger, curry leaves,  fry for a min.
  • Now add sooji to this and fry for 2 min and add salt and boiling water to it.
  • Keep on stirring while you add water, otherwise lumps will be formed.Keep on stirring.
  • If the mixture looks dry, then add some more water.
  • Reduce the flame and simmer the upma for 2-3 minutes.
  • Keep stirring so that the upma does not stick to the pan.
  • Garnish upma with coriander/cilantro leaves.
  • Serve upma hot with slices of lime or any pickle or sugar.
Tip:
 Add salt in boiling water. The water must be slightly salty.
