Shrimp Bottle Gourd Curry//Sorakaya Royyala Kura

Kalagalupu kuralu is common in Coastal Andhra whether it is purely vegetarian or non vegetarian. Kalagalupu kura means mixed curry of 2 or more vegetables OR one vegetable and meat or sea food. Coastal Andhra is also famous for sea food like shrimp, fish, crab. Mostly shrimp can be cooked with many veggies like Beerakaya/Ridge gourd, Vankaya/Egg palnt, Anapakaya/Bottle gourd, Bendakaya/Ladies finger, Mamidikaya/Mango, Mulakada/Drum stick......

Today's recipe is Sorakaya/Anapakaya/Bottle gourd and Shrimp. For this recipe we can use fresh or dry shrimp.

Serves : 4 
Ingredients:
  • Shrimp/Royyalu - 200 grams
  • Bottle gourd/Anapakaya/Sorakaya - 1, Medium size
  • Onion - 2, medium
  • Green chillies - 2
  • Curry leaves - 10
  • Mustard seeds/Avalu - 1/2 tsp
  • Ginger-garlic paste- 2 tsp
  • Red Chilli powder - 1 tsp
  • Coriander powder - 1 tsp
  • Cumin powder - 1/2 tsp
  • Garam Masala - 1/2 tsp homemade or 1 tsp store bought
  • Coriander leaves for garnishing
  • Turmeric powder - 1/2 tsp
  • Oil - 1 or 2 tbsp
  • Salt to taste
Preparation:
  • Clean shrimp and keep aside.
  • Peel bottle gourd and chop into small pieces, chop onion and slit green chillies.
  • Heat oil in a pan, add mustard seeds, curry leaves and green chillies. When mustard seeds start spulttering add onions and fry till they turn brown. Add ginger-garlic paste and fry till there is no raw smell.
  • Add red chilli powder, cumin powder, coriander powder, turmeric powder, salt and shrimp, mix well cook with lid on till shrimp is half done.
  • Add bottle gourd pieces and cook till shrimp and bottle gourd pieces are cooked completely. Bottle gourd oozes out water which will be sufficient to cook. If require add little water. Add garam masala and adjust salt.
  • Garnish with coriander leaves and serve with rice.
