Gongura Royyalu Nuvvula Kurra (Prawns cooked in Sour Greens)

Gongura/Sour green is very popular in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and in some parts of Karnataka. Recipes made with gongura are more popular in hotels and restaurants. Gongura Pachadi(pickle), Gongura royyalu(prawns), Gongura Mamsam(Mutton), Gongura Chicken, Gongura Pappu(Lentils) are very popular in Andhra.

Gongura/Sour greens are very rich in Iron, Folic acid and Vitamins. Today's recipe is Gongura royyalu nuvvula pachadi. Sesame seeds/Nuvvulu are good source of calcium, Zinc, iron and copper. We will make sesame seeds into powder and add to the gravy which adds more flavor to the dish.  

Gongura Royyalu Nuvvula Kurra (Prawns cooked in Sour Greens)

Ingredients:
  • Sour greens/Gongura - 1 bunch
  • Prawns/Royyalu - 1/2 lb
  • Ginger-garlic paste - 1/2 tsp
  • Small Onion - 1, chopped
  • Garlic cloves - 10, skinless
  • Green chillies - 6
  • Dry Red chillies - 6
  • Sesame seeds/Nuvvulu - 2 Tablespoon
  • Mustard seeds/Avalu - 1/2tsp
  • Cumin seeds/Jeera - 1/2 tsp
  • Turmeric powder - 1/2 tsp
  • Oil -  2 Tablespoon
  • Salt to taste
Preparation:
  • Clean prawns and mix 1 tsp ginger-garlic paste, 1/2 turmeric powder, 1/2 red chilli powder, salt and 2 tsp oil and fry in a pan on low heat, until oil oozes out.Finally before switching off the stove we can add these prawns to the curry.
                                                      OR
  • Clean prawns and mix ginger-garlic paste and keep aside.
  • Clean sour greens and in a pot take little water, green chillies and sour leaves and cook for 10 minutes. (No need to take pot full of water, 1/4 of water will be sufficient)
  • Now let it cool for some time and make it into course paste.
  • Dry roast sesame seeds/nuvvulu and red chillies in a pan and make them into powder.
Method:
  • Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds/avvalu and cumin seeds/jeera. When they start spluttering add garlic cloves and fry for a minute and add chopped onions and fry for couple of minutes.(Onions should not be fried much)
  • Now add uncooked prawns and cook until prawns are half done.
  • Add sour leaves paste and mix well and cook until it leaves the edges and prawns are done.
  • Add sesame powder and cook for 2 minutes.(If cooking prawns separately add now)
  • Serve with hot rice.
